Met My Fellow Travelers....

February 21, 2015: We had our Washington DC symposium on getting ready for our real life Global Education. I met my travel companions. There are 11 of us plus a support person from TGC. They are mostly from the Northeast. 4 Science, 4 Social Studies, 2 English and 1 math teacher. Only 2 are men. We are all secondary education, mostly high school.  Hopefully we will learn about our traveling partners and our host teacher, so we can plan our visit.
We know we will spend 5 days with our host teacher, but before and after we will learn about the country, its educational system, meet very special important people, and see some of the capital city of Kampala.

Did you know (facts about Uganda)...

February 3 ,2015  Ecologically, Uganda is where the East African savannah meets the West African jungle. It has uniquely lush destination where lions prowl the open plains.   Track chimpanzees through the Tropical Rainforest , or navigate the tropical waterways teeming with hippos and crocodiles.  Mostly I want to visit the misty mountains to visit the majestic mountain gorillas.
Since it is situated at the geographical heart of the African continent, Uganda has long been a cultural melting pot, as evidenced by the existence of 30-plus different indigenous languages belonging to five distinct linguistic groups, and an equally diverse cultural mosaic of music, art and handicrafts. The country’s most ancient inhabitants, confined to the hilly southwest, are the Batwa and Bambuti Pygmies, relics of the hunter-gatherer cultures that once occupied much of East Africa to leave behind a rich legacy of rock paintings, such as at the Nyero Rock Shelter near Kumi.

Do One Thing For Diversity

I now know more....

Jan 31, 2015: I am going to Uganda with 11 other teachers from all over the country. They are science and social studies teachers. We are planning on getting ready and one of the first steps is to get the vaccinations needed.  Yellow Fever is required to enter Uganda, but they recommend for Malaria, Typhoid, Polio, Measles.  They say be careful of drinking the water since you can get many parasites that cause a very upset stomach.  I am bringing my medicines. They take up a whole bunch of room.  No need to worry about Ebola, the other stuff is just as bad.

And I am going to....

Dec 2014: I found out today that I am going to Uganda. How wonderful. I have not been to East Africa, for that matter I have only been to Africa once when I went to Egypt.  Even though it is in the Tropics (it on the Equator  and the Sahara Desert is right above it); Uganda is a sub tropical area with mild spring days and mountains.  Speaking of mountains, this is where Diane Fossi's gorillas are. Hopefully I will be able to video conference from the gorilla areas. Every one is concerned: 1st for Ebola, well Ebola is mainly in West Africa but Uganda has lots of other viruses like: malaria, yellow fever, Hep A. 2nd is lots of Africa is war torn, so hopefully we will be protected?  I will find out more later.
